
Michael is Professor Emeritus of Medicine and Physiology at the University of Toronto (U of T). His training (1966-1974) includes U of T, the Cardiovascular Research Institute in San Francisco, Harvard University, and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He was Distinguished Professorship of the Heart and Stroke Foundation and the Searle Chair in Cardiovascular Research (1989-1998). He Founded and Directed both the Centre for Cardiovascular Research and the Heart and Stroke Lewar Centre of Excellence (HSRLCE) at the University Health Network (UHN) and U of T. He was Director of Cardiovascular Research, U of T and UHN, 1983 – 1998, Chief of Cardiology UHN, 1989-1998 and First Director of Peter Munk Cardiovascular Program 1993 –1998.
With Professor C.C. Liew, he established the first cardiovascular molecular genetics laboratory in Canada. They were the first to determine the genetic code for human myosin and to develop a practical genetic test for viral myocarditis. More recently, he is recognized for pioneering our understanding of the relevance of circadian rhythms to cardiovascular health and disease, thereby laying the groundwork for the critical importance of Circadian Medicine. He has received numerous awards and honours for his contributions. The “Michael J Sole Annual Lectureship in Cardiology” was established in 2010 by the UHN and in 2014, the annual HSRLCE Cardiovascular Scientific Day at U of T was renamed “The Annual Michael J Sole HSRLCE Cardiovascular Scientific Day”.
