UHN Researchers to participate in research networks for improved care for chronic pain.

Congratulations to UHN Researchers that will be participating in recently funded SPOR (Strategies for Patient Oriented Research) Networks in Chronic Disease.
The funding announcement was made today by the Federal Minister of Health, Dr. Jane Philpott at the McMaster University Medical Centre.
Successful SPOR Networks will receive $12.45 million over 5 years and the creation of these Networks will enable researchers across Canada to collaborate with the aim of improving care for chronic disease. The funds will be administered by the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR) and are supported by a national coalition of federal, provincial and territorial partners.
Of the five Networks that were funded nationally, two include UHN researchers:
Chronic Pain Network
This cross-Canada network will enable patients, researchers, health care professionals, educators and policy makers to enhance effectiveness and access to the best available care for those suffering from chronic pain, while advancing the translation of cutting edge researching into clinical practice.

• Krembil Senior Scientist Karen Davis (Principal Investigator)
• Krembil Clinical Researcher Allan Gordon (Co-Investigator)
• TGHRI Affiliate Scientist Joel Katz (Co-Investigator)
• Krembil Clinical Researcher Mohammed Shamji (Co-Investigator)
Network in Diabetes and its Related Complications
The aims of this project will two pronged: 1) to develop a national diabetes patient registry; and 2) shared patient and health care provider risk assessment tools. Combined, these research deliverables will shed light on the unique risks of diabetes-related complications faced by individuals, while advancing the development of effective, evidence-based diagnostic tests and preventative strategies therapies for diabetic heart, kidney, eye and nerve disease.

Canada’s SPOR program was established to “foster evidence-informed health care by bringing innovative diagnostic and therapeutic approaches to the point of care, so as to ensure greater quality, accountability, and accessibility of care.”
