My medical training sparked my interest in caring for “complex” patients who have mitigating factors that preclude them from receiving the benefits that are otherwise expected from medical intervention. While several biological, socioeconomic and cultural factors can contribute to complexity, I became most interested in helping patients who are underrepresented in clinical trials, with a focus on women, older adults and those with multiple illnesses. Through my research and clinical experiences, I learned that the relationship between breast cancer and cardiovascular disease is complex and begins before the time of cancer diagnosis. These experiences shaped the first objective of my research program which involves mitigating the adverse effects of chemotherapy by exploring the modifiable elements of the sociocultural environment, promoting mental well-being and enabling earlier detection of heart disease to arrest its progression.

The second objective of my research program involves cardiovascular disease in older adults; I have begun a research program focused on stroke prevention in patients with atrial fibrillation. I plan to use population-based data to better predict the risk of stroke in older patients with atrial fibrillation and to investigate alternate methods of stroke prevention.
