Bio Research Interests Publications Appointments

Dr. Husain's research interests primarily focus on infection risks and outcomes in solid organ transplant recipients, particularly antibiotic stewardship for immunocompromised patients. His clinical research aims to advance diagnostic tests for invasive aspergillosis and develop effective prophylactic strategies against viral, bacterial, and fungal infections in immunocompromised individuals. He has co-authored over 200 peer-reviewed publications and more than seven book chapters. He established the world's largest structured Transplant Infectious Diseases Fellowship program in 2009. Dr. Husain has served as the Director of Research at the Ajmera Transplant Centre, Toronto General Hospital, and he currently serves as the Medical Director of the Antimicrobial Stewardship program at UHN.


 




Dr. Shahid Husain completed his Internal Medicine residency from Cook County Hospital and his three year Infectious Diseases Fellowship from the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center (UPMC) with specialized training in Transplant Infectious Diseases. He completed his Masters in Clinical Trials from the University of Pittsburgh. He remained at UPMC as faculty and joined the University of Toronto in 2008.
