Conference Article:
I attended the 28th Canadian Association of Nurses in Oncology (CANO/ACIO) Annual Conference, whichpresented useful topics on innovation, technology, self-management, and education. The conference provides an exceptional opportunity to bring together a group of nurses from across Canada and other parts of the world to begin creating synergy of nurses’ collective roles, skills, impacts, and contributions to cancer care in Canada and beyond for the future.

Because my research is about designing and testing of interventions that reduce cancer treatment-related symptoms by effectively activating patients in the self-management of their symptom, this conference provided a full opportunity for practice and constructive dialogue.

This conference was an ideal platform for early results of my work because it consists of oncology nurses, researchers and education scientists. The conference theme this year, Future Ready: Together, Towards Tomorrow, contributes to shifting the cancer care system to be more person centred and optimally address patient and family needs across the care continuum.

The structure of the conference includes oral/poster presentations, workshops, symposia, award lectureships, CANO/ACIO award presentations and keynote addresses. I was presenting two oral presentations in the conference for thirty minutes (each) on Thursday, October 20 and Saturday, October 22. I also received the 2016 CANO research award.

This conference provided me with a valuable learning experience. For instance, it was an excellent opportunity to gather together, interact and exchange findings and views during conference sessions, coffee breaks and the conference dinner. Consequently, I got to know a number of academics and professionals who have similar research interests.

Finally, I would like to thank the Office of Research Trainees (ORT) for giving me the opportunity to attend the Conference via their conference funding which covered the part of my expenses. This conference is very interesting and enriches my experience with more information, knowledge and confidence. Also, many thanks should go to my supervisor, Dr. Doris Howell for her support and guidance.
