Drs. Eleanor Fish and Abdallah Daar inducted as Fellows of the African Academy of Sciences.

After a rigorous peer-review process, two TGHRI Senior Scientists have been selected as 2015 Fellows of the African Academy of Sciences (AAS). Drs. Eleanor Fish and Abdallah Daar will be inducted on June 20, 2016 at the AAS 10th General Assembly in Kasane, Botswana. The AAS is a pan-African organization that is dedicated to honouring and supporting individuals that have displayed excellence in their fields and made outstanding contributions to science, technology and innovation in the African continent.
Dr. Eleanor Fish is a Tier 1 Canada Research Chair in Women’s Health & Immunobiology. With over 150 research publications, Dr. Fish has made impressive contributions to the field of immune signalling. Specifically, Dr. Fish was the first to characterize the biological activities of the cytokine known as interferon-α. She has also developed various innovative interferon-based therapeutic strategies for infectious diseases such as SARS and Ebola virus. Her achievements have garnered her international distinctions, including the Vivian & Seymour Milstein Award, in recognition of her exceptional contributions to translational interferon and cytokine research, and Canadian Society for Immunology Investigator Award in recognition of research and mentorship excellence.
Dr. Abdallah Daar is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada and a world leader in the application of life sciences to address global health inequalities. His expertise in global health innovation and policy, regenerative medicine, biotechnology, transplantation and bioethics is demonstrated in over 350 publications. He has also contributed as an advisor and consultant with the United Nations, the World Health Organization and UNESCO within the realm of global health policy, science and innovation. His induction as an AAS Fellow complements his other honours, which include the UNESCO Avicenna Prize for Ethics of Science and Hunterian Professorship of the Royal College of Surgeons of England.
