$3.4 million in funding from Genome Canada’s Genomic Applications Partnership Program (GAPP) has been awarded to a project led by PM Cancer Centre Affiliate Scientist Dr. Jean Wang.

Dr. Wang’s project, titled “SIRPαFc: Translating Genomics Research into a Novel Cancer Immunotherapy”, will advance a promising therapeutic towards clinical trials. The therapeutic to be developed works by interfering with a protein on the surface of leukemia stem cells, known as CD47, which is thought to protect the cells from attack by the immune system.

The project represents a collaboration between Dr. Wang’s group, Dr. Jayne Danska at SickKids and Trillium Therapeutics Inc.—a publicly traded biotech company based in Toronto.

According to Genome Canada, GAPP funding supports “research projects that address real world challenges and opportunities as identified by industry, government, not-for-profits, and other ‘users’ of genomics research.” Dr. Wang’s project is one of four projects announced in the most recent round of funding.

Congratulations Dr. Wang!
