On November 10th, Dr. Tak Mak was awarded an honorary medal from the German Signal Transduction Society (STS). He received the award in recognition of his lifetime contributions and critical discoveries in the fields of immunology, signal transduction and cancer biology. Dr. Mak is most well known for being the first to reveal the sequence and structure of the T cell receptor, a molecule that is indispensable for mounting an immune response against tumour cells and viral infections.

Dr. Mak is a Senior Scientist at PM Cancer Centre and the Director of the Centre’s Campbell Family Institute for Breast Cancer Research. He is one of UHN’s most prolific researchers: he has published over 870 scientific articles, has been invited to give 92 keynote lectures and holds 18 honorary degrees or professorships from universities worldwide.

He received the 2016 Signal Transduction Society/Cell Communication and Signaling journal (STS/CCS) Honorary Medal and gave an award lecture at the STS’s annual meeting held in Weimar, Germany. The medal is presented every year to an outstanding scientist who inspired other scientists to examine signal transduction processes.
