TGHRI Affiliate Scientist Dr. Michael Sefton has been awarded the 2016 Terumo Global Science Prize for his research achievements in regenerative medicine and biomaterials science.

The award honours research that fuses "excellence in materials engineering, life science, and the related discipline of systems engineering" with the aim of advancing research towards practical application. Dr. Sefton's research into biomedical engineering has led to the creation of new engineered tissues from combinations of cells and biomaterials. Recently his team has found ways of creating new materials that have the ability to enhance the growth of blood vessels, which promotes wound healing.

Dr. Sefton was selected to receive the honour from a pool of top international researchers in the field of biomaterials and is only the third researcher ever to receive the award.
