UHN’s award-winning podcast Behind the Breakthrough returns with a fifth season, featuring nine researchers from across the organization. Hosted by Christian Coté, this podcast offers a unique look into the personal journeys of UHN researchers and their medical and research achievements.

Behind the Breakthrough reflects the breadth of scientific research that exists at UHN, through the eyes of the people that make it happen. Each episode is a glimpse behind the scenes with the individuals who are tackling some of the world’s greatest health problems”, says Dr. Brad Wouters, Executive Vice President of Science & Research at UHN.

In Season 5, listeners will hear Dr. Gelareh Zadeh, Senior Scientist at the Princess Margaret Cancer Centre and Co-Director of the Krembil Brain Institute, describe her research advancing treatments for complex brain tumours and cancers. Dr. Mamatha Bhat, Scientist at TGHRI, talks about the ways she is harnessing the power of artificial intelligence to improve survival among liver transplant recipients. Dr. Cristina Nostro, Senior Scientist at the McEwen Stem Cell Institute, reflects on the challenges that she faced completing her PhD in the United Kingdom while learning a second language—English. Dr. Hance Clarke, Clinician Investigator at the Krembil Research Institute, reveals the transformative moment that led him to pursue a career in medicine. Dr. Tatyana Mollayeva, Scientist at the KITE Research Institute, reflects on her journey as she left home at age 16 to pursue science and medicine.

“We know UHN’s biggest asset is its people, who are united in their desire to improve the lives of our patients and collaborate on ways to develop novel treatments and cures. We also know there is great power in the story of our people and their motivations for why they do what they do,” says Kyla Kumar, UHN Vice President, Communications and Brand Strategy. “These stories are an amazing way to engage the public with what we do every day at UHN.”
