
Dr. Thomas L. Forbes is the Surgeon-in-Chief & James Wallace McCutcheon Chair in the Sprott Department of Surgery and Clinical Vice-President at the University Health Network, and Professor & Vice-Chair of the Department of Surgery, Temerty Faculty of Medicine, University of Toronto. He has published over 300 peer-reviewed papers, editorials and book chapters and given over 100 invited lectures or guest professorships. He is a Distinguished Fellow of the Society for Vascular Surgery where he also serves as Treasurer, and a Fellow of the American Surgical Association.
He is a former Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Vascular Surgery, and former Section Editor of Rutherford’s Textbook of Vascular Surgery, as well as Past-President of the Canadian Society for Vascular Surgery, a former Residency Program Director and former vice-Chair of the Vascular Surgery Specialty Committee of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada. He obtained his medical degree in 1990 from the University of Toronto and completed his general surgery and vascular surgery training at Western University.
Previous positions include R. Fraser Elliott Chair and Division Head of Vascular Surgery at University Health Network (2018-2022) and Professor of Surgery and Chair of the Division of Vascular Surgery at the University of Toronto (2014-2023). He began his surgical career at Western University from 1998 to 2014. At Western, he served as Chair/Chief of the Division of Vascular Surgery (2005-2014) and the inaugural Graduate Program Chair of the Masters of Science in Surgery program. He was the founding Program Director of the Advanced Aortic Surgery Fellowship at the University of Toronto, a joint fellowship between vascular and cardiac surgery in open and endovascular therapies for thoracoabdominal aortic pathologies.
