My research focuses on 1) pre-operative risk factors for delirium, in particular cognitive impairment in cardiac and vascular surgery patients; 2) identification of higher risk individuals so that preventative measures can be initiated; and 3) examination of the high cost of delirium in terms of the poorer outcome to the patient and family, and increased requirement for resources while in hospital. A recent project involved the development of a questionnaire for Quality of Life in patients with aortic stenosis. This questionnaire was based on patient-reported outcomes and was developed to address the concerns that patients have identified. The questionnaire has been translated into a number of languages and we have continued our work in validation.
