My research program focuses on improving healthcare safety by putting people (patients, staff, and caregivers) at the centre of system design. Human errors often arise from poorly designed systems rather than individual mistakes. Effective systems consider how human skills, teamwork, culture, tools, technology, physical spaces, policies, and regulations interact. Our approach begins with observing real-world work to understand the factors that help or hinder performance. We then test and refine solutions with end users to see how well-designed systems support patient and staff safety. Working with stakeholders across all levels of the healthcare system (including patients, frontline staff, management, industry, and regulators) ensures that improvements can be scaled and sustained. This research aims to create safer, more reliable healthcare environments where people can thrive.
