Jacob Udell

Dr. Udell is the Division Head of Cardiology and Clinician-Scientist at Women’s College Hospital (WCH) and the Lead of the Peter Munk Clinical Trials and Translation Unit (CTTU) at University Health Network. A clinical trialist with operations expertise, Dr. Udell’s area of interest is the design and conduct of large pragmatic cardiovascular outcome trials for primary and secondary prevention of heart failure (HF) and atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD) and enabling his clinician-investigator colleagues to conduct their own clinical research with the support of the CTTU. As principal investigator, global coordinator investigator, and steering committee national lead investigator, Dr. Udell has led a number of international randomized trials including testing the cardioprotective effects of influenza vaccine in patients with heart failure or myocardial infarction (INVESTED; JAMA 2021), SGLT2/1 inhibition in patients with type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular risk factors and chronic kidney disease (SCORED; NEJM 2021), SGLT2 inhibition early post-myocardial infarction (EMPACT-MI; NEJM 2024), finerenone in heart failure with preserved ejection fraction (FINEARTS-HF; NEJM 2024), and fish oil supplementation in patients with chronic kidney disease requiring hemodialysis (PISCES; NEJM 2025).
