Rahul received his medical training (MD) from Calcutta University (India), followed by a Ph.D. from McGill University (Canada). He completed his post-doctoral training at the University of Toronto (Canada) and the University of Pennsylvania (USA). He also completed his industrial internship with Depuy-Synthes (USA) and visiting fellowships at Universitet Lund (Sweden) and the AO Research Institute (Switzerland). During his postdoctoral training, he was funded by fellowships from The Arthritis Society of Canada and the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC). McGill University (Canada) then recruited him as an Assistant Professor (Research) in the Department of Surgery.

The overarching focus of my research program is the repair and regeneration of applications for hypoxic (physioxic) and avascular(hypo) elements of the musculoskeletal (MSK) system, such as cartilage, intervertebral discs, and ligaments. At UHN, my research program focuses on epigenetics and endotyping of multijoint osteoarthritis (including osteoarthritis of the spinal column), identifying predictive biomarkers for pain phenotypes, and developing novel therapeutic strategies, with the central aim of improving post-op outcomes and recovery in patients with degenerative MSK disorders. We also investigate the biomolecular modulation of the bioenergetic machinery of the MSK cells to develop novel TERM applications.
