Dr. Michael Bryan Sharpe passed away with his family by his side, on Wednesday, June 22, 2016 at the age of 51 after a hard-fought battle with esophageal cancer.

Dr. Sharpe was the Associate Head of Medical Physics (Professional and Academic Affairs) in the Radiation Medicine Program at the Princess Margaret (PM) Cancer Centre, an Affiliated Faculty of the Techna Institute, and an Associate Professor in the Departments of Radiation Oncology and Mechanical and Industrial Engineering at the University of Toronto.
He was a dedicated researcher who worked tirelessly to build an innovative, world-leading radiation treatment program at the PM Cancer Centre for the benefit of cancer patients across the province and around the world. He was recognized for his contributions to the field of Medical Physics on numerous occasions, was awarded Cancer Care Ontario’s Innovation Award in 2007, the University Health Network’s Inventor of the Year Award in 2009 and a Fellowship of the American Association of Physicists in Medicine in 2015.

He was a generous teacher and mentor who delivered courses on advanced radiotherapy techniques to medical physicists, radiation oncologists, and radiation therapists locally and around the world. His exceptional reputation as an educator was globally recognized: he was recruited by the American Society of Radiation Oncology (ASTRO) for their international teaching programs and was a founding faculty member of the annual European Society of Radiotherapy and Oncology (ESTRO) course on Advanced Treatment Planning.

His tireless efforts to improve the lives of patients with cancer went beyond his role as a researcher and teacher. He used his incredible passion and talent for cycling to raise funds for cancer research and played central role in establishing the Radiation Medicine Program Accelerator team in the annual PM Cancer Foundation Ride to Conquer Cancer.
