UHN researchers awarded over $1.5 million to acquire state-of-the-art research tools.

On Friday, April 15, 2016, the Government of Canada announced that it is awarding nearly $20 million in funding to researchers at 33 Canadian universities. The investment was made through the Canada Foundation for Innovation’s John R. Evans Leaders Fund, which is designed to help universities attract and retain the best and brightest researchers by providing funds for state-of-the-art research infrastructure.
“Investing in the tools and technologies used for discovery-based research are crucial to furthering Canada's reputation as a global-leader in science and innovation. Today's announcement demonstrates Canada's strong support for science and its role in a thriving, healthy society,” said Terry Beech, the Parliamentary Secretary of Science.
Over $1.5 million of the funds are earmarked for UHN and will support the acquisition of equipment needed to implement innovative and unique research programs, including:

- Defining and overcoming immunosuppression to fight persistent viral infection and cancer; led by PM Cancer Centre Scientist Dr. David Brooks
- Elucidating the role of macrophages in cardiovascular disease; led by TGHRI Scientists Drs. Clinton Robbins and Slava Epelman
- Examining retinal development, injury and repair; led by Krembil Senior Scientists Drs. Valerie Wallace, Philippe Monnier and Krembil Scientist Dr. Jeremy Sivak
- Preventing falls in vulnerable populations; led by TRI Scientists Drs. Kristin Musselman and Alison Novak
- Targeting mitochondrial dysfunction in leukemia; led by PM Cancer Centre Scientist Dr. Steven Chan
- Unravelling the mechanisms associated with joint damage in osteoarthritis; led by Krembil Senior Scientist Dr. Mohit Kapoor
