New Statistical Methods for Detecting Disease Genes in Human Populations
Many diseases with a simple genetic etiology have been discovered, but complex diseases (those caused by multiple interacting genes in conjunction with environmental influences) have proven much more difficult to elucidate. We are developing flexible techniques for the analysis of complex diseases which require very few assumptions to be made, and which are hence very reliable.
Cluster analysis is a popular exploratory technique for analyzing microarray gene expression of co-expressing genes are hypothesized to constitute a functional group. We are developing computationally fast clustering methods which allow an object to belong to more than one cluster, can choose clusters which are predictive of patient outcome, and can aid the identification of differentially expressed genes.
