Research Interests
The objective of the research program is to define and manipulate cellular and molecular mechanisms affecting the growth of malignant blast stem cells obtained from the blood of patients with Acute Myeloblastic Leukemia.

The cellular studies depend on the use of two complementary culture methods; these permit the assessment of cell divisions that regenerate blast populations and other divisions that expand population size by producing sterile cells.

The molecular work depends on the use of clones for hemopoietic growth factors and their recombinant products. Using the methods of molecular biology it is feasible to examine growth factor action and the regulation of its production.

Throughout, the work is done in close collaboration with clinical colleagues. This association makes it possible to obtain a variety of clonal blast samples, relate the laboratory findings to the outcome of treatment and even to suggest the use of new therapeutic regimens.
