Yana Yunusova, Ph.D., CCC-SLP is an Associate Professor in the Department of Speech-Language Pathology at University of Toronto, an Associate Scientist at Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre and a Senior Scientist at the Toronto Rehabilitation Institute.

My research is focused on understanding the effects of neurologic disease on speech production. At present, my research program is composed of three themes. The first theme is focused on issues of early diagnosis and subtyping of the bulbar form of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). The second theme is devoted to the study of neuroanatomical underpinnings of motor control and cognitive deterioration in ALS. The third is concentrated on the development of new treatment methods for motor speech disorders. My lab at KITE enables highly multidisciplinary collaborative researchers to use innovative computer vision and gaming modalities for assessment and rehabilitation of speech impairments due to neuro-degenerative diseases or stroke. The research is focused on the utilization of 3D cameras to accurately assess oro-facial impairments, track recovery, predict functional impairments in speech and swallowing, and assist clinicians in planning personalized treatments using in-house developed apps. My research is also dedicated to designing a system for the delivery of structured speech therapy in as engaging games in portable devices.
