  • Rheumatoid Arthritis
Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is an autoimmune disorder of unknown etiology characterized by cellular/humoral hyperreactivity in a genetically susceptible host. The precise pathogenetic mechanisms which perpetuate chronic inflammation within the joint, remains unknown.
  • Osteoarthritis
Osteoarthritis is a mild inflammatory disorder of unknown origin. A subset of patients have an inflammatory form of arthritis leading to more Rapid destructive disease. The mechanisms accounting for this subset of OA are unclear.

Our research efforts are focused towards an understanding of the cellular/molecular events contributing to both the early and late phases of RA as well as the inflammatory subset of OA. We are pursuing several lines of investigation in relation to these goals.
  • Immunologic Effect of Biologic Agents in the Treatment of RA
We are examining the efficacy and biologic effects of targeted immunobiologic therapies in patients with resistant RA.
  • Angiogenic Factors in the Pathogenesis of RA & OA
We are examining the role of angiogenic factors (and endogenous inhibitors)in patients with RA.
  • Mechanism of Synoviocyte Survival in RA & OA - Implications for Novel Therapeutic Strategies
We are delineating the inflammatory pathways contributing to the survivial and growth of synovial lining cells in rheumatoid arthritis.
