Craig Chambers, PhD

Professor Chambers obtained a joint PhD in Brain & Cognitive Sciences and Linguistics from the University of Rochester in 2001. He held a faculty appointment at the University of Calgary before joining the University of Toronto in 2005.
Professor Chambers' research focuses on the real-time interpretation of spoken language. This work adopts a lifespan approach to communication and involves studies of preschoolers, young adults, and older adults. Most generally, this work examines the core processes involved in the on-line processing of speech sounds, words, sentence structure, and sentential and contextual meaning. Much of this work involves the use of eye tracking methodologies that allow aspects of language interpretation to be explored in naturalistic contexts while preserving the millisecond-level measures necessary to reveal the nature of language processing in real time.

Professor Chambers' research has been funded by the Natural Science and Engineering Research Council (NSERC), the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC) and collaboratively through funding from the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR).
