Main areas of research interest include:
  1. The development of objective imaging and psychophysical techniques for the quantification of sight-threatening diabetic macular edema
  2. Improved understanding of the physiological mechanisms regulating retinal blood flow and vascular tonus and the impact of healthy aging upon these mechanisms
  3. Improved understanding of the patho-physiological basis of retinal diseases associated with retinal blood flow disturbance such as diabetic retinopathy, hypertensive retinopathy and glaucoma
The research is undertaken within the Retina Research Group (RRG) based at the Toronto Western Hospital and in the School of Optometry, University of Waterloo. It has already resulted in the development of techniques with improved sensitivity and specificity to detect retinal disease and an improved understanding of the natural history of early retinal disease. This information will now be utilized to assess, develop and trial new treatments to preserve the vision of people with retinal disease.
