Posted On: January 28, 2019

Dr. Husam Abdel-Qadir, a cardiologist at the Peter Munk Cardiac Centre, received one of five prestigious Polanyi Prizes from the Province of Ontario.

The distinction is presented to outstanding researchers in the early stages of their research careers and this year the prizes are each valued at $20,000.

Dr. Abdel-Qadir’s research is focused on the link between treatments for breast cancer and heart disease. His research revealed that women with breast cancer were at increased risk of having an abnormal heart rhythm known as atrial fibrillation.

Dr. Abdel-Qadir says that his success would not have be possible without his mentors, including PMCC cardiologist Dr. Douglas Lee, and the renowned Dr. Jack Tu, who recently passed away. Regarding the impact that Jack Tu had, Dr. Abdel-Qadir says, "If I had the ability to dedicate this [award] to someone, it would be him."

The award adds to other research honours received Dr. Abdel-Qadir, including an Early Career Women's Heart and Brain Health Chair from the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada. Dr. Abdel-Qadir’s appointments include Scientist and cardiologist at Women’s College Research Institute and Assistant Professor at the University of Toronto.

Congratulations Dr. Abdel-Qadir!
