Remy Pollock

I’m a postdoctoral fellow in rheumatology, studying psoriatic arthritis under Dr. Dafna Gladman. After I finished my MSc, I started in her lab as a research technician. Because I found the research so interesting, I decided to pursue a PhD, which I completed in January 2016. I am now using this time to put the final touches on some big projects and sharpen my skillset.

My experience at UHN—and in particular at the Krembil Research Institute—has been great. There’s a strong sense of community within the Krembil which makes for a very supportive learning environment.

ORT: What motivates you to get through the day?
The idea of going home to make a delicious meal. I love to cook. It kind of reminds me of doing experiments in the lab. I like to cook all sorts of food but have yet to master my mother’s native Filipino cuisine.

ORT: What is your spirit animal and why?
This is a really easy question for me. Horses are definitely my spirit animals. I come from a family of horse owners, trainers, breeders, and veterinarians, and grew up around thoroughbred horses. I find their tenacity incredibly motivational.

ORT: If you were not in research, what field would you have pursued?
I would have pursued a career in public health. During my undergrad I worked in a laboratory at Public Health Ontario that tested beach and drinking water for bacterial contamination. Public health does so many interesting behind-the-scenes things like this.

ORT: What is your ideal day away from the lab?
My ideal day away from the lab would involve hiking boots, a tent, a canoe and lots of fresh air. I’ve camped in many of Ontario’s beautiful provincial and national parks but I think my favourite spots are Bruce Peninsula and Manitoulin Island.
