How the Seminar Series Work
PIs at TWRI participate in the seminar series on a voluntary basis.
There are a total of
~ 20 seminars
per year:
10 external and 10 internal PIs. In any one year, participating
TWRI PIs will:
(i) Host an invited speaker, or
(ii)
Give a talk about their own work, or
(iii) Be on the waiting list for (i) and (ii)
A list of participating PIs is here. If you are not on the list, but would like to participate, please contact
Julie Wan (
). Your name will be added to list (iii) and will move up each year
according to the total number of external and internal seminars in the prior year.
Selecting External Speakers: Each year in spring (months prior to the start of the seminar series in
September), Julie will send out an email to the ten PIs on the “Host an invited speaker” list (i), asking
each person to submit three eminent scientists for consideration, with a brief explanation as to why
they should be considered. The Visiting Speaker Chair (Dr. Antonio Strafella,
) will meet with two other TWRI scientists to select 10 speakers,
one per host. The hosts will then each contact their selected top candidate speaker and organize
a date for the visit. If a speaker is unavailable, an alternative will be invited. For other duties of the host,
please see here.
Internal Speakers: Each year the 10 external talks will be interspersed with 10 internal
seminars (ii above).
The dates for internal talks will be decided after the external seminar
dates have been finalized.
This set up is designed to involve as many TWRI PIs as possible. It is not exclusive,
and if you are not on the
list and
would like to be added please contact Julie Wan (
). If you are not on the list
of involved PIs but would like to host a one off seminar please contact the Visiting Speaker Chair and, within budget
constraints,
we will do our best to support a special seminar. The key is simply to invite high profile scientists and
ensure a vibrant seminar series.
